I flew from London to Cork, Ireland for only a penny, seriously! They just tax it, so it ends up being like 15 pounds – try EasyJet. Anyway, I recommend starting in London and possibly doing a few daytrips from there, like to Bath, Stonehenge or Oxford. Then you can fly to Ireland (easier and cheaper than a ferry), then fly back into Edingburgh. Then when I flew back out from the UK (in London) I just took a train from Scotland to London.

In this order: London, Oxford, Bath, Cardiff, Leamington Spa, York, Durham, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Highlands, and all the tiny villages and countryside in between. Dublin is in Ireland so I’d fly there from Edinburgh.
