Dublin Central
Could this be the partying capital of the world ?
V M asked:

I have quite a bit of experience in amateur drama and used to belong to a drama society before I moved to Dublin.

I know that there a a few courses available but I do not know what one would be best.
I would like to do this for a hobby, a challenge, to meet people and to better my acting skills.

I would appreciate it if someone could help me with this please.
V.

This would be a great jumping off point – if THEY can’t recommend something, then all hope is lost! ;o)

I am a professional theatre worker based in Dublin and take it from me, the Abbey will not help you. Don’t even bother ringing them.

There are a number of degree- and diploma-level drama courses in Dublin, but having had experience with recent graduates of all of them, I can’t in all conscience recommend any of them. There is something seriously wrong with all of them – usually either the quality of tuition is terrible, or the course focuses on turning out bland and characterless auditioning machines. The Trinity Acting Studies course was the least bad, but in characteristic style, Trinity has apparently decided to shut it down because they have not been accepting applicants for a couple of years now and show no signs of doing so in the future.

Also, I should point out that all of the remaining courses that are any good at all are not suitable for you, because they are very strongly focused on making students into professional actors – teaching them how to make CVs, give good auditions, network with industry professional etc. (They’re not so hot on teaching them how to act, mind you.) If you really want ‘a hobby, a challenge, to meet people’ and to better your acting skills, then I suggest you find a drama society in Dublin and join that.

    Good luck!

Just jump in the deep and and start going to auditions. If you can act you can act. Acting schools are about making money and showing you a few tricks. Also, lie on your CV, everyone does. Mention you did a drama course in your home town.
